Experience the healing power of scent

Fragrances have the power to reduce anxiety and lift your mood. They can penetrate deep inside your psyche, and have a real influence on your wellbeing. Amid the hustle and bustle of busy festive days, a little boost can be a big comfort.

The delicate whisper of lavender. The invigorating zest of citrus. The powerful aroma of eucalyptus. And the sweet comfort of warming vanilla. There are lots of different fragrances that evoke different feelings within you. And lots of lovely ones to discover in our advent calendar.

Make festive aromatherapy a new self-care ritual

The scents you’ll unveil in our calendar are ideal for enjoying a relaxing moment of aromatherapy every day. Perhaps you can light one of the limited edition seasonal candles as you run a nice warm bath, or before your daily meditation. Maybe you’re curled up on the sofa with a good book, next to a soft reading light accompanied by the gentle flicker of a candle.

However you introduce some relaxing moments of daily self-care, embracing some welcome mindfulness could do you the power of good during the countdown to Christmas. You won’t simply tick off the days, you’ll savour each one by being present in the moment.

Getting started with aromatherapy

Scents from essential oils used in aromatherapy stimulate different parts of your brain. This includes your limbic system, which controls your emotions. The oils can also stimulate the production of serotonin, making you feel good, and are used to help with things like stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, nausea and pain.

In addition to being inhaled, essential oils can also be absorbed by the skin. They’re widely used during massages to help muscles and joints relax, as well as in bath products for a soothing soak.

Common essential oils used in aromatherapy include lavender, citrus, chamomile, cedarwood and bergamot. Look out for high quality products that use pure oils, and beware of fake oils and oils diluted with chemicals. It’s a good idea to test small amounts of oil on your skin before use, and dilute oils before applying them topically. Purchase small products first to test what works for you.

Using oils for specific needs

When you have a range of aromatherapy products, you can use different oils depending on what you need.

Stress relief

Lavender is known for its calming properties, while bergamot’s citrusy aroma can lift your spirits and help to reduce anxiety and stress.

Energy boost

The invigorating citrus aromas of grapefruit and lemon are wonderful for clearing your mind, while peppermint’s known for its stimulating properties to awaken your senses and improve your focus.

Headache relief

Peppermint’s cooling effect can help to relieve headaches, while lavender can also soothe headache symptoms – while also reducing stress, which is a common trigger for headaches.

Immune support

Oregano has antimicrobial properties to help bolster your immune system, while tea tree has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sleep aid

Lavender’s calming effect can help to ease you into sleep, while marjoram’s sedative properties promote a good night’s rest.
