Do Natural Deodorants Work? Separating Fact from Fiction

By Kira Kemlo

As more and more of us are becoming increasingly health and environmentally conscious, natural deodorants are rising in popularity. We know a lot more today about traditional deodorants and their effects on our health, and this education may spark a desire to switch. But do natural deodorants really work? Let’s explore their effectiveness and debunk some myths along the way.

Understanding natural deodorants

Natural deodorants are formulated to control body odour without the use of synthetic chemicals like aluminium, parabens and phthalates. Common ingredients used instead include baking soda, arrowroot powder, shea butter and clays.

Conventional anti-perspirants will typically include aluminium compounds, as well as other chemicals, which plug up our pores and don’t allow sweat to pass through. But sweating is a natural process – it’s what our bodies are designed to do. Stopping your body’s natural functions may not be the best thing for your health.

As natural deodorants are usually plant or mineral based, they’re kinder to skin and our planet. They offer the perfect eco-friendly alternative if you’re concerned about your health and the environment.

Benefits of natural deodorants

We all have tons of bacteria living in our armpits. This might seem horrifying, but it’s all part of your body’s natural ecosystem. When you sweat, this bacteria feeds on the moisture. This is what produces the smell.

Sweating is an important process. It helps us to regulate our temperature. Rather than preventing sweat, natural deodorants neutralise the odour instead. They rely on ingredients like kaolin clay, eucalyptus and sodium bicarbonate to keep you dry while stopping any unwanted smells. Shea butter and coconut oil are often blended into the formula, to nourish your skin and keep it soft and smooth.

Not only are natural deodorants gentler to your skin,  they’re also much better for the planet. Most are formulated using biodegradable, eco-friendly ingredients. The packaging is often recycled and made from non-plastic material too.

Our skin-friendly and sustainable range of natural deodorants are formulated using tapioca starch. Tapioca starch is a natural alternative to talcum powder. It works by absorbing moisture to keep you dry and comfortable all day. Supported by magnesium hydroxide, our natural range is a powerhouse of kind ingredients that absorb sweat brilliantly, while neutralising odour-causing bacteria.

Things that affect how natural deodorants work

As with any transition, changing from a conventional deodorant or antiperspirant can pose some challenges. Your body needs time to adjust, and you need to take your skin’s natural chemistry into account. Let’s explore some things that you need to consider before making the switch.

The detox period

It’s important to know that as you make the change to natural deodorant, there can be a period of transition. All those years spent using pore-blocking aluminium can build up waste that now has a chance to come out. This armpit detox as it’s come to be known, may contribute to unusual body odour or excessive amounts of sweat.

The detox period can cause lots of people to give up on natural deodorants. And after a few days of them seemingly not working, it’s understandable. But you need to know that this period will pass. And when it does, you’ll realise that it’s not that natural deodorant doesn’t work for you – it’s just that it needed more time.

The right ingredients

Find natural ingredients that your skin likes. Many brands use sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda in their formulas. While it’s great for absorbing sweat and getting rid of odour, it can also be irritating. If you begin to notice dryness or any kind of rash, you may be sensitive to baking soda.

Our natural deodorants don’t contain sodium bicarbonate, minimising the risk of irritation. Our natural products use zinc to absorb odours instead. This means they won’t interfere with the natural flora of your skin, allowing you to stay dry, fresh and comfortable.

Application

Rule number one when applying natural deodorant is to always apply it to clean, dry armpits. Avoid using too much product, as it can rub off on your clothes. A thin layer is enough. But remember that at the start, you may feel sweatier than usual. So don’t be afraid to apply a little more if you need to.
